Green projects and incentives in the workplace can help employers nationwide to meet UK commercial energy efficiency targets, it has been said.
Lara Conaway, sustainability manager at Morgan Lovell, advised: "Staff can not only help in the efficiency drive but they expect employers to be doing something about it."
She said that employers should take steps to encourage switching computers off at night or implementing energy saving measures such as installing live energy data boards, linked to new wireless sub meters.
"Make sure that there are dedicated staff who have responsibility for energy reduction included in their job description and consider giving them an incentive to increase efficiencies," Ms Conway added.
A new report by the Sustainable Development Committee indicates that many government offices are not on track to meet reductions in their carbon dioxide emissions for 2010-11.
Findings reveal that carbon emissions from offices are down 6.3 per cent since the baseline year - an improvement of 2.3 per cent from last year, but still not on track to meet the 2010-11 target of a 12.5 per cent reduction.
