Secure and
sustainable energy supplies for European countries are at the heart of a new set of proposals which have been published by the European Commission.
The commission noted rising energy costs and dependency on foreign supplies as well as its commitment to emissions reduction, renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso said: "54 per cent of Europe's energy is imported at a cost of 700 (£598) for every EU citizen.
"We have to address this urgently, by taking measures to increase our energy efficiency and reduce our dependence on imports. We have to invest and diversify."
The Energy Security and Solidarity Plan involves: improving infrastructure and diversifying supplies; managing energy relations; improving transparency of available oil and gas stocks and clarifying commercial procedures; boosting energy efficiency; and making the best use of the EU's own energy sources.
E.ON creates renewable energy through a variety of technologies and encourages domestic energy efficiency.
Its 21 onshore and offshore wind farms could help meet the UK target of generating 15 per cent of energy from renewable sources by 2012.
