A fund to invest in clean energy in a bid to move the UK to a low carbon economy has been announced by prime minister Gordon Brown.

On a tour through the Persian Gulf to secure funds to assist struggling economies around the globe, Mr Brown secured £150 million from the Qatar Investment Authority to fund clean energy projects.

Mr Brown said: "Today's announcement is an excellent example of the partnerships we need between oil producing and oil consuming countries to develop new energy sources and technologies, diversifying our economies and reducing our carbon emissions."

Renewable energy, which is generated by means such as wind turbines, is part of the UK's attempts to reduce carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 205.

E.ON , which has 20 offshore and onshore wind farms in the UK, is currently working on the Robin Rigg wind project and is a stakeholder in the London Array development which is set to be the world's largest wind farm.
