Renewables 'will replace gas for electricity by 2015'

Gas will be replaced by renewable energy as the second largest source of electricity by 2015, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).

Even under a pessimistic forecast of attempts to reduce carbon emissions, renewable sources such as wind, wave and hydro will overtake gas, the IEA claimed in its World Energy Outlook.

Coal will remain the top fuel for electricity generation and if current trend's continue carbon emissions are set to rise 45 per cent between 2006 and 2030.

Three quarters of the new emissions will come from China, India and the Middle East, while a total of 97 per cent will come from outside the 28 member states of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

According to the report, the share of low-carbon energy would have to rise from 19 per cent in 2006 to 26 per cent in 2030 to limit global temperature increases to three degrees centigrade.

The tipping point into severe impacts of climate change is considered to be two degrees centigrade.

E.ON has a range of low-carbon energy generation plants, including 21 wind farms.

It is also bidding to build a coal plant with carbon capture and sequestration technology demonstration plant.
