The UK is facing an energy gap as an increasing number of old coal-fired and nuclear power plants are decommissioned, it has been claimed.
According to The Climate Group, the issues of energy supply is not only important this winter but in the years to come.
Diana Profir, project manager of Green Power Market Development Group, part group said that "scaling up renewable energy rapidly is a major need" in order to tackle the problem.
She added, however, that other low-carbon power generation technologies are "also key".
"Carbon capture and storage will also be crucial especially since the EU may introduce a regulation preventing any new power plants emitting more than 500g CO2/kilowatt-hour, which would automatically rule out any new coal-fired plants without carbon capture and storage," Ms Profir said.
Currently, Parliament is considering the Climate Change Bill which would commit the UK to cutting CO2 emissions by a minimum of 26 per cent by 2020.
