A building which has various features recommended by E.ON and could have lower energy costs along with emissions than others, is in line for an environmental award.

The Okehampton business centre in West Devon has been shortlisted for the Best Small Renewable Energy Scheme in the South West Green Energy Awards.

According to the council, the building will save 50 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year and with its own renewable energy sources, will reduce its electricity costs.

The building's wind turbine is to generate six kilowatts, while it also benefits from solar photovoltaic cells and biomass wood pellet boiler.

It has already been given an 'excellent' award from the Civil Engineering Environmental Quality Assessment and Award Scheme, an award of excellence from the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Best Sustainability Project in the Local Authority Building Control Awards.

Tracy Windemer, West Devon Borough Council’s civil engineer, added: "The building has also achieved a BREEAM excellent score from the Building Research Establishment which is the world's leading environmental assessment method for buildings."

E.ON recommends that before taking the step of installing wind turbines or solar panels, managers of other buildings or homeowners take the cheaper steps of improving the buildings insulation, installing double glazing and installing an energy efficient boiler.
