Green homes to sweep Wales

Up to 400 homes equipped with a variety of measures recommended by E.ON could soon be dotted across Wales.

The Welsh Assembly has just announced an £80 million scheme to build the energy efficient homes across 22 locations in the country.

Each home will have a high level of energy efficiency and will be expected to meet the requirements for a level four or five rating on the Code for Sustainable Housing.

This is likely to include a high level of cavity wall insulation, loft insulation and draught proofing and will be used as a test bed for how the technology can be rolled out across the country.

Jane Davidson, minister for environment, sustainability and housing, said: "I have already set targets for sustainability standards in new buildings as part of tough new planning policies to tackle climate change.

"The planning system needs to do more to encourage the take-up of new renewable energy technologies by developers to help Wales play its part in tackling climate change."

A range of building companies and organisation recently signed a commitment to green construction principles.
