E.ON has long term contracts in place for natural gas and is not concerned by plans by Iran, Russia and Qatar to set up a gas cartel.

Bernahard Reutersberg, E.ON Rurhgas chairman, said the proposals to set up a group similar to the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries for natural gas did not worry him.

"We have long lasting contracts with most of these countries, specifically with Russia," he told a conference.

"Our contracts with Russia last until 2036," he added.

E.ON uses gas, a low carbon fuel, to generate 35.7 per cent of its electricity, according to the Electricity Info website, as well as providing gas for heating and cooking to homes.

Some people have expressed concern that if a cartel for gas is formed those countries could act together to raise the wholesale market costs of the fuel.

However Shirvani Abdullayev, analyst at Alfa Bank, told Trend News: "Preliminary testing of this model indicates that supply restrictions by any country or countries would have relatively mild affects on global gas supplies and prices."
