An organisation E.ON is a member of has suggested that business can provide a solution to climate change.
At a UN-endorsed meeting of Combat Climate Change (3C), a group which represents 55 companies including E.ON, the initiative's coordinator Lars G Josefsson urged business leaders to play their part.
"Business is a solution to the climate change crisis," he said, the AFP reports.
He added: "Business leaders must show the leadership, focus, and spirit of common understanding that has been lacking in the political process."
And, despite the economic downturn, he said he could feel optimism among the participants.
The European Union has set a target of cutting carbon emissions by 20 per cent - compared to 1990 levels - by 2020.
It has also agreed that 20 per cent of energy should be generated by renewable sources.
E.ON is increasing the amount of renewable energy it offers, with the Robin Rigg wind farm set to join 20 already in operation.
The company also provides advice on energy saving and carbon emission reducing technologies for the home.
