Blythe wind farm nears completion

An offshore wind farm located off the Northumberland coast is set to be generating power by the end of the month.

Energy company E.ON, which owns the farm, says it has now replaced a cable which was damaged by rocks on the seabed.

A spokeswoman said that the company was carrying out last minute maintenance checks on the turbines which should be completed by the end of October.

Speaking to New Energy Focus, she said: "A brand new armoured cable has now been laid, along a different route and has now been energised over the past few days with a view to returning the site to power."

In more good news for E.ON, the government of Abu Dhabi has rescued a UK-based renewable energy project by agreeing to invest in a 20 per cent stake.

It was feared that the London Array project, based in the Thames Estuary, may have to be put on hold after Royal Dutch Shell withdrew from the scheme.

Once up and running, the offshore wind farm is expected to generate enough energy to power 750,000 homes.
