Britain 'has best wind power' in EU

Britain has the best wind and wave resources in the UK, Gordon Brown told a conference yesterday.

Delivering his message by video, the prime minister told the British Wind Energy Associations 30th annual conference that the UK would not use the economic downturn as an excuse to shy away from carbon emissions reduction or renewables targets.

He added that by sticking to the pledge to generate 15 per cent of electricity from renewable sources, a £100 billion market and 160,000 jobs would be created.

"You may have heard some people say that these difficult economic times should or will reduce the government's commitment to building a low carbon economy. They should not and will not," he said.

"On the contrary, the investment and jobs we will create from our commitment to low carbon energy is one of the drivers that will bring us prosperity," he added.

E.ON currently has 20 offshore and onshore wind farms and is building the Robin Rigg in the Solway Firth, which is to be one of the largest offshore projects in Europe.
