Co-operative Group wind farm extension welcomed
Plans by the Co-operative Group to expand its first wind farm have not received any local objections.

According to the Guardian, proposal to increase the number of turbines at Coldham Farm from eight to fifteen has been met with support by local associations.

The newspaper quotes the chairman of the Coldham Residents Action Group as saying the Co-operative Group "got off on the right foot" with the community by listening to their objections over the original plans in 2003.

As well as relocating the turbines in response to local requests, the Co-operative Group also set up an education centre.

The organisation has previously won the Man Group International Climate Change Award for making combating climate change a priority.

It has sourced 98 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources since 1998.

As well as setting up the wind farm, it has also installed 7,000 photovoltaic panels on the 35-storey Co-operative Insurance Tower.

E.ON, which has 20 onshore and offshore wind farms, also recommends photovoltaic panels as a way of cutting a company's carbon dioxide emissions and electricity bills.

The result of the Co-operative Group's measures has been a boost of pre-tax profits of 120 per cent since 2004 and a cut in emissions of 30 per cent.
