E.ON formed a joint venture with Abu Dhabi's Masdar, securing further investment for what will be the biggest wind farm in the world – the London Array.

Masar, bought 40 per cent of E.ON's stake in the project, according to the largest publicly owned electricity company.

The London Array is expected to have up to 271 turbines and will have a capcity of one gigawatt.

Located in the outer Thames Estuary, the site was favoured because it has high wind speeds and low water depths as well as suitable grid connections.

According to E.ON, the massive wind farm would generate enough electricity for the equivalent of 750,000 homes.

The array of turbines, which will have a maximum height of 170 metres above sea level would cut carbon dioxide emissions by 1.9 million tonnes – enough to fill Wembley Stadium 250 times.

It would also contribute to meeting the government's renewable energy targets.

The UK is committed to generating ten per cent of electricity from renewable sources by 2010 and the London Array would represent ten per cent of this.

By 2020, the UK is expected to generate 15 per cent of electricity renewably.
