Microgeneration measures recommended by E.ON could pay for themselves more quickly following the government's introduction of feed-in tariffs.
Ed Miliband, the secretary of state for Energy and Climate Change, announced plans to introduce guaranteed prices for small-scale electricity generators.
The E.ON website notes that among the microgeneration technologies which homeowners could install on their property are wind turbines and solar panels.
Under Mr Miliband's plans, small-scale renewable generation projects would benefit from guaranteed premium rates for the electricity they generate.
This would allow homeowners looking to make their homes more energy efficient to earn back the money they spent on their solar panels more quickly.
While E.ON provides advice on wind and solar power, it also suggests that homeowners start making their homes efficient with the cheapest steps first.
Among the suggestions are installing radiator reflectors, double glazing and loft and cavity wall insulation.
