Friends of the Earth has welcomed energy minister Ed Miliband's comments that the government is planning to introduce feed-in tariffs to aid small green power projects.

The charity reacted to the politician's debut speech in parliament yesterday, saying that the renewable energy potential in Britain is "enormous".

But it also claimed that a "comprehensive scheme" related to the environment is "urgently needed".

An initiative "must encourage homes, businesses, communities and local authorities to play their part in tackling climate change by developing clean, green electricity and heat," said the pressure group's climate campaigner Dave Timms.

Feed-in tariffs will offer renewable energy generators a guaranteed price for power "above the general market rate for electricity" over a long-term period, according to New Energy Focus.

Power firm E.ON claims that the UK energy industry is currently facing a period where change is needed.
