Britons could make energy savings and reducetheir utility bills and carbon emissions at the same time by focusing on domestic water use, according to the Consumer Council for Water (CCW).

Supporting the Energy Saving Trust's Energy Saving Week, during which it is urging consumers to spend ten minutes engaging in a green activity, the CCW has issued a series of tips.

It noted that three-quarters of domestic energy use is related to heating homes and their water.

As a result, its tips were focused around using less water. They ranged from boiling only the necessary amount of water in the kettle and taking shorter showers to reducing the temperature of washing machine cycles to 30 degrees.

E.ON also suggests insulating a hot water cylinder with foam insulation or a lagging jacket, which should be at least 80 millimetres thick.

The largest publically owned energy company also advises consumers to wrap exposed pipes in insulation.
