A Nottingham man has installed photovoltaic solar panels on his roof and now earns money from the surplus energy they generate.

David Bartrop of Long Eaton installed £10,600 of solar panels on his roof with the help of a £5,000 grant.

As well as generating the equivalent amount of electricity to what his home uses, he also produces a surplus of energy, which he now sells to the grid for £109 a year, This is Nottingham reports.

Nottingham South MP Alan has urged other home owners to follow in Mr Bartrop's footsteps.

According to E.ON, solar power can be harnessed through photovoltaic panels, which convert light into energy or in active solar heating which uses the sun's heat to warm a household's water.

The largest publicly owned energy company claims that there are over 100,000 small solar heating systems installed in the UK.

It claims that active water heating costs £2,500 - £4,000 for an average house, which is the equivalent of less than 10p per kilowatt hour.
