Householders will be able to see exactly the impact of the energy efficiency improvments they make to their home as smart meters are to be fitted in every home by 2020.

A government minister yesterday announced to the House of Lords that the government would adopt an amendment making it compulsory for every home to have a smart meter.

The devices allow households to keep track of their electricity and gas consumption as well as the electricity generated by their domestic microgeneration devices such as solar panels and wind turbines.

Lord Hunt, minister for sustainable development, climate change adaptation and air quality said: "This is a major step forward; no other country in the world has moved to an electricity and gas smart meter roll-out on this scale."

He added that the decision was a "no brainer" and said that following a two year period of consultation and working on the design, the project is to be rolled out over ten years.

Having a smart meter installed will allow E.ON customers to see the benefit of the energy savings suggestions the company makes.

E.ON can suggest a range of energy efficiency measures from installing a new energy efficient boiler to fitting double-glazing.
