Ministers to fight fuel poverty

The fight against fuel poverty continues, said ministers today, as they held meetings with energy suppliers to establish how to cooperate to combat the problem.

This follows the release of new figures showing that the number of households suffering fuel poverty rose by one million to 2.5 million between 2005 and 2006.

Households suffering fuel poverty pay one tenth of their income towards paying energy bills.

Environment minister Hilary Benn said: "Today I met with energy suppliers and the home insulation industry to stress the need for all of us to work together as fast as possible to make more homes energy efficient, and to discuss with them the opportunities for bringing forward insulation activity so the maximum number of people are able to benefit this winter."

E.ON has helped the government with its past programmes to install insulation in homes around the country to make them more energy efficient and thereby reduce their bills.

The energy group also offers its StayWarm tariff, a 12-month fixed rate that is available for households with someone over 60 years old.
