More than 90 per cent of businesses are not aware that they are entitled to claim tax breaks on plants and machinery that contribute to energy efficiency, reducing emissions or water conservation.

A YouGov survey has revealed that 92 per cent of firms are not aware of the Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme.

Businesses can write off the capital cost of investment in energy efficiency technologies against taxable profits, which can help them recoup the costs more quickly.

Among the technologies which are eligible for the capital allowance are boiler equipment, pipework insulation and warm air and radiant heaters.

As a further incentive to investing in energy efficient technologies the Carbon Trust recently revealed that companies which take steps to reduce their emissions could boost their value by up to 80 per cent.

Failure to implement changes can also be disastrous for companies, with the trust's report suggesting that not taking those steps could put two thirds of a company's value at risk.
