First 100-turbine wind farm gets connecting cables

A deal has been signed to connect the UK's first 100-turbine offshore wind farm to the national grid.

Aberdeen company Subocean has won the £27 million contract to connect the Thanet wind farm to the grid as well as link the turbines to each other.

The wind farm is to generate a maximum of 300MW of electricity – enough to power 240,000 homes.

In order to protect the marine environment, the 33kV cables connecting the turbines to an offshore substation and the 132kV cables relaying the power ashore, would be buried.

Subocean operations director Mike Daniel said: "This development will play a key role in generating green power in line with the Government's commitment to renewable power and to improving security of energy supply as the UK becomes more dependent on imported energy."

E.ON is set to bring back the UK's first ever wind farm – the Blyth Offshore Wind Farm - back online after damage to the cables saw it temporarily disconnected.
