Councillor's solar panels save him money

A councillor for climate change who installed solar photovoltaic panels on his roof has made substantial savings on his energy bills.

Nigel Lee, Coventry's councillor for climate change, converted his house in an attempt to become self sufficient for energy.

He installed one of the biggest solar panels in Coventry on his roof, a step E.ON suggests for customers seeking to cut their bills, and has cut his electricity costs by £600 a year.

As well as photovoltaic panels, the councillor also installed solar thermal panels which convert the sun's energy into heat for central heating or warming water.

Inside the home he has also made some adjustments, including switching his lighting to high intensity, but low-energy LED lights.

The loft has 15-inch high density insulation, which helps regulate the home temperature.

All UK households are to have insulation installed by 2020, with the government announcing a scheme to make insulation free or half price to people who do not have it installed already.
