Measures suggested by E.ON could be installed in eco-towns in a bid to help them meet the high standards set by experts.
The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (Cabe) and BioRegional have called for eco-towns to helps residents lead a green lifestyle.
A report published by the organisations entitled What makes an eco-town? calls for residents of eco-towns to live within the means of the planet.
It said that dwellers of the new developments should be assisted to live by "one planet living" principles, which would see them consume just as much as the earth could support if everyone consumed the same mount.
Energy efficient measures, such as the installation of insulation, could contribute towards lower energy use.
And, as well as emitting less carbon, people who use less energy will also find themselves making savings on their energy bills.
E.ON also recommends installing double glazing and photovoltaic solar panels to reduce energy bills.
