Households urged to become 'power stations'

Households are being urged to install solar panels on their roofs, as they are a better investment than having money in the bank.

Britons can combat the rise in energy prices, which has resulted from high costs in the wholesale markets, by installing their own microgeneration devices, claims a solar panel supplier.

E.ON gives consumers the basic information they need to get their home fitted with what Solarcentury's executive chairman Jeremy Legget called "more than energy – it's an asset on your roof".

He said: "What better way to be secure in your energy than turning your building into a power station for your electricity and water heating?"

And the cost of the solar panels, which boost the price of a home, would not add much to the cost of a new build.

He said it accounted for just a one to three per cent of the total spend on a new home.

Generating electricity is just one way people can reduce their home energy bills.

They can also make the most of the energy by using energy efficient appliances, light bulbs and by switching off anything they are not using at the plug.
