A biomass energy plant could power a hospital and college buildings in the Scottish highlands.
Wood chips from Inverness College's forestry department could be used to fuel a biomass combined hat and power (CHP) centre that would serve Raigmore Hospital and college buildings.
According to the Press and Journal talks are underway on the potential biomass plant, which would be part of a new city campus development at Beechwood.
The plant would help reduce the carbon emissions of the NHS Highlands trust.
At the moment the trust emits 10,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year, while the Raigmore Hospital is responsible for 37 per cent of its energy demand.
A report from the trust states: "The engine, fuelled by wood chips, would generate electricity which would be used by those involved. Heat which is a byproduct from the generation of the electricity is then sold to those who have a demand for it."
We are a leader in biomass generation and operate the biomass plants at Steven's Croft. Last year we submitted a scoping statement for a 150MW plant at Portbury Dock.
