Wind power is set to grow faster than nuclear in China over the next 11 years, a government minister has announced.
China's plan for nuclear power is to increase its current generation of nine gigawatts to 70 gigawatts by 2020, up from its previous proposal of 40 gigawatts.
Now Fang Junshi, head of the coal department of the National Energy Administration, has said that the country will have around 100 gigawatts of wind power by 2020.
Reuters reports him telling the audience at a Coaltrans conference: "Installed wind power capacity is expected to reach 100 million kilowatts in 2020. That will be eight times more than in 2008.
"The annual growth rate will be about 20 per cent."
According to figures from the Energy Saving Trust, 40 per cent of
wind energy in Europe blows over the UK. This makes Britain ideal for harnessing wind power to generate electricity.
