Renewable incentives shaken up

01/04/2009 16:52

Incentives for generating renewable energy were changed today creating greater incentives for undeveloped technologies.

Energy firms have to present Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROC), which are issued by the renewable generator installation, covering a proportion of the amount of electricity they provide.

Until today, electricity from all renewable technologies earned one ROC per megawatt hour.

However, the changes introduced today include banding, so that less well developed technologies will be worth more.

For example wave, tidal, solar photovoltaic and geothermal technologies will accrue two ROCs per megawatt hour.

Offshore wind power has increased to 1.5 ROCs per megawatt hour.

Explaining the changes earlier this week energy minister Mike O'Brien said: "This week's ramping up of financial backing in favour of technologies such as offshore wind is evidence of our determination to create the right investment environment for renewables."

We have a variety of different renewable energy technologies in our portfolio, the largest of which is onshore and offshore wind power.
