Pubs 'to get helping hand in going green'

As the economic downturn continues, more Britons have cut back on going out for a drink at their local pub, in favour of purchasing alcohol from a shop and staying in during the evenings.

However, such a trend has seen many local drinking establishments being forced to close their doors permanently, as they struggle with rising outgoings and falling consumer demand amid the credit crunch.

But boosting energy efficiency in order to achieve cheaper gas and electricity bills could see more pubs reducing their outgoings.

The Carbon Trust's Big Business Refit programme has been designed to do just this and will offer loans to pubs to help them manage the cost of replacing inefficient equipment with new appliances.

It is hoped that if more organisations take advantage of the scheme £37 million will be saved on gas and electricity bills, while carbon emissions could also be reduced.

Tom Daley, Carbon Trust chief executive, said: "Hospitality business owners are realising that for every month they 'make do and mend' with old inefficient equipment, they are wasting more cash on unnecessarily high energy bills."
