Britons looking for ways to improve their energy efficiency and cut their gas and electricity bills may wish to invest in air source heat pumps.

The renewable energy technology works by collecting heat from the air outside and concentrating it into heat and hot water for a home.

Writing for the Guardian, Ashley Seager said: "Highly efficient air source heat pumps [...] are being touted as the next big thing and a more affordable option than solar."

He was commenting on a group of eco properties built in Wiltshire by former newspaper tycoon Eddy Shah.

Speaking of the benefits of the renewable energy technology, one of the houses' owners David Bailey said that his wife and he were "extremely" happy with the effect the pumps have had in helping them to achieve cheaper gas and electricity bills.

Furthermore, he noted that his heating and hot water system was "excellent".

Another person currently benefiting from renewable energy is Barack Obama's grandmother.

Mama Sarah and other locals in Kogelo, Kenya, recently attended a Greenpeace workshop in how to install solar panels.
