Londoners may no longer be left seeing red on their journey to work as plans for 300 of the city's junctions to have LED lightbulbs installed within their traffic lights were given the go-ahead by the mayor.
Boris Johnson revealed that more than 10,000 of the bulbs will be installed, in a move which could see the capital's carbon emissions produced by the existing lights being cut by 60 per cent.
Furthermore, it is hoped total annual carbon emissions will be reduced by 600 tonnes, while
gas and electricity bills will be cut by £200,000.
"Installing these eco-bulbs will cut the climate change emissions coming from London's galaxy of traffic lights by more than half, as well as [saving] money from energy bills," said Mr Johnson.
He added that he had "seen the future" and it comprised of "energy-busting traffic lights".
Homeowners may also find that they can benefit from cheaper electricity bills by replacing their current lights with LED bulbs.
