In an attempt to pull more people out of fuel poverty and
reduce carbon emissions, the Welsh Assembly Government has announced its plans to get rid of the charges currently paid by people planning to have renewable energy generating technology installed.
Households in Wales will no longer have to pay a planning fee when looking to have solar panels, ground or water source heat pumps or flues associated with biomass and combined heat and power systems, subject to certain legal criteria, it has been revealed.
Environment, sustainability and housing minister Jane Davidson explained that such
micro-generation technology has a large role to play in decarbonising the country's energy supply and also tackling climate change.
"Wales in particular has a large share of off gas-grid, hard to heat and hard to treat homes. In these cases, micro-generation can be the most effective method of removing people from fuel poverty and providing energy security," she explained.
Meanwhile, the Energy Saving Trust has revealed that Londoners are wasting a total of £70 million on gas and electricity bills due to poor
insulation.
