Gas workers 'should not stray outside competence zone'

Those who carry out work on a gas boiler or similar appliances should not stray outside of their competence zone, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned.

Doing so could carry grave consequences, the executive said, highlighting the recent case where a gas fitter from Brecon, Peter Tongue, was jailed following the deaths of two people from carbon monoxide poisoning from a central heating system he had worked on.

Hugh Emment, an inspector for the HSE, said: "This sends out a stark message to gas engineers that working outside their assessed competence can cost them their liberty but more importantly can cost lives."

He added that it also provides a warning to those who carry out work but are not listed on the Gas SafeTM Register.

Gas engineers must be listed on the Gas SafeTM Register. They will be issued with a card detailing the types of appliances they are allowed to work on.

The Gas SafeTM Register replaced Corgi as the official body for the registration of gas engineers at the start of April this year. At the time of its creation, the organisation stated that Brits are "too trusting" when it comes to the issue of gas safety.

It urged people never to consider tinkering with a gas boiler or fire themselves.
