'More needs to be done' to prompt green home improvements

Britons may need to be convinced to invest in energy efficiency in their homes by being offered a grand gesture, it has been claimed.

Gordon Miller, founder of whatgreenhome.com, said that sometimes such incentives are needed to inspire people to act.

He was commenting on recent proposals put forward by the UK Green Building Council, which suggested a council tax rebate as a way of funding energy efficient home improvements.

Loans offered to help Britons go green would be paid back by whoever was residing in the property through council tax, it was suggested.

As well as putting the country in a better place to meet its 2050 carbon reduction targets, such plans may also help households achieve cheaper gas and electricity bills.

"Ultimately, what is being proposed [...] is just one of a series of measures to address the issue of Britain's notoriously energy inefficient homes," Mr Miller noted.
