Britons looking for a new gas boiler may soon be able to benefit from a boiler scrappage scheme which has been proposed to Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling as he drafts his autumn pre-Budget report.

The news comes as the British Retail Consortium contacted the chancellor to urge him to consider introducing the scrappage plans for household appliances.

Furthermore, the group suggested also scrapping VAT charges on green household appliances in order to inspire more people to invest in energy efficiency.

Plumbing merchant PTS has voiced its approval of a boiler scrappage scheme - where a petition is currently being put forward to the prime minister.

Alan Ball, PTS managing director, said: "The installation of high efficiency boilers in a larger proportion of homes will help to cut fuel bills whilst increasing demand in all sectors of the industry."

As well as resulting in cheaper gas bills, Mr Ball explained that such a scheme could also help the UK reach its environmental targets.
