Resource efficiency could save companies money needed to survive the current economic downturn, according to Envirowise.

Using resources, including energy, more efficiently could help companies survive the difficult economic climate, according to a government-supported body.

Making the most of resources could cut costs for businesses that could help them survive in the challenging year ahead, according to Envirowise.

According to the environmental consultation firm resource efficiency is not just about improving the image or environmental impact of a firm, but could produce important savings.

Elaine Sharp, programme marketing manager for Envirowise, said: "We have many examples of where resource efficiency has had a significant impact on reducing a business' costs.

"One manufacturing company introduced a pallet reuse and resale scheme and saw £100K in savings over two years. These sorts of figures should make businesses sit up and take notice of the savings they can make for themselves."

Environment Agency chairman Lord Chris Smith urged businesses to take a "green business is good business" approach and that certain measures could cut their utility costs.
