Solar energy reaches milestone

Solar energy generation has reached a new milestone, with the cost of manufacture dropping below the $1 per watt mark.

According to renewable energy company First Solar, it has managed to produced solar modules for 98 cents per watt of generating capacity.

"This achievement marks a milestone in the solar industry's evolution toward providing truly sustainable energy solutions," said Mike Ahearn, First Solar chief executive officer.

He also welcomed the support that the renewable industry has received from governments around the world, such as Germany, where small-scale renewable energy installations can earn their owners above-market rates for electricity sold to the grid.

The so-called feed-in tariffs are to be introduced in the UK next year, giving households and businesses the chance to sell electricity to the grid for more than they buy it.

Both homes and businesses can also benefit from energy efficiency measures such as replacing old boilers and double glazing windows.
