Tesco continues with turbine plans

Supermarket chain Tesco is continuing with plans to install wind turbines in car parks at stores across the UK.

Local newspapers report that in addition to existing applications, it has proposed to put wind turbines at its Pinchington Lane, Newbury, and Old Kent Road, London, outlets.

The turbines it plans to install are not the three-bladed variety people might be used to seeing.

While the familiar turbines have a horizontal axis, Tesco plans to install turbines with a vertical axis in which the blades spin around the main shaft.

In some of the places where the company has applied for permission they have been considered as artwork.

According to the retailer, the turbines would provide energy to provide power to each store and cut its annual energy bills.

Spokesman Tony Fletcher told Newbury Today: "We're trialling them in sites where they seem to be suitable and have got an appropriate wind speed. They will make a good contribution to the running costs of the store, although not enough to run the whole store."

In January, the company opened its most energy efficient store in Cheetham Hill, Manchester.

It is expected to cut energy bills in half compared to 2006, while reducing carbon emissions by 70 per cent.
