Underground energy sourcing for public buildings

Government buildings should be required to tap into underground heat in order to reduce public sector carbon emissions.

That is according to the Environment Agency chairman Lord Smith, who used the opportunity of a recent event at the Royal Society of Arts in London to argue that the government ought to take the initiative in adopting green energy technology.

According to the peer, making ground source heat pumps compulsory for public sector buildings such as hospitals and schools is the "most obvious answer" to the financial and environmental crisis now facing the government.

London's iconic Gherkin office block is among the best-known examples of a building which makes use of underground heat sources.
