Growth in the renewable energy sector will be demanded as a result of "mounting concerns over climate change" according to the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
As well as combating the problems associated with climate change, such as drought and floods, a pamphlet released by the TUC said that the government should aid the development of the renewables sector in order to ease the economic situation.
It claimed that by creating the right incentives to make the UK rival renewable powers Denmark and Germany, the government could restrict the "length and severity of the current recession".
The TUC noted that the market for
renewable energy technologies in 2005 was estimated at £2.9 billion but was forecast to grow to £7.5 billion by 2015.
According to the TUC, it is up to the government, not the free market, to aid the development of the renewable industry sector.
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "Government action now to invest in low carbon technologies and in the skills to develop a new green workforce should mean the current recession is much shorter and shallower for UK businesses."
