The mobile phone industry has moved to improve its green credentials by announcing plans on handset charger connections which will require less electrical energy.
Announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona by the GSM Association (GSMA), the project will see standby energy usage reduced by 50 per cent.
In addition, the companies involved intend to create a universal charger which will work with all phones, potentially removing the need for up to 51,000 tonnes of duplicate chargers.
The organisation hopes that the solution, which will use Micro-USB, will be available globally by 2012.
Rob Conway, chief executive of the GSMA, said: "The mobile industry has a pivotal role to play in tackling environmental issues and this programme is an important step that could lead to huge savings in resources, not to mention convenience for consumers.
"There is enormous potential in mobile to help people live and work in an eco-friendly way and with the backing of some or the biggest names in the industry, this initiative will lead the way."
