Representatives of 75 countries have established an international body tasked with speeding the global transition to
renewable energy.
At a conference in Germany, delegates signed up to form the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
Speaking at the founding conference, German environment minister Sigmar Gabriel said the formation of IRENA marked an expression of conviction that renewables could cover the majority of energy consumption.
Referring to current energy generation methods he said: "If we carry on this way, the Earth's temperature will increase by five or six degrees centigrade as a result of greenhouse gases from fossil fuels. Such a temperature increase would destroy the Earth as we know it."
Among the countries that signed up were original partners Spain and Denmark as well as newcomers such as Iran, Serbia and Morocco.
We are developing various forms of
renewable energy.
In the UK alone we have 21 onshore and offshore wind farms as well as a biomass plant.
