Historic homes to get renewable water heating

Renewable heating solar panels are to be installed on listed buildings in Edinburgh.

Energy bills of residents in Edinburgh's historic centre are to be slashed as a new scheme aims to install solar water heating panels on seven B-listed buildings.

The Renewable Heritage project will provide half the hot water for 49 properties in the historic tenements in the Conservation Area and World Heritage Site.

All the homes in the buildings will benefit from the systems, not just the higher ones nearer the panels, as a result of "groundbreaking" pipework.

Jenny Lewis, chair of Lister Housing Co-operative, said: "This project will help reduce our tenants' fuel consumption, save carbon and support Scottish jobs, without in any way jeopardising our B-listed Georgian tenements – it's a win-win solution."

Scotland's only solar panel manufacturer, AES, will be providing the panels.

Heating water is one of the biggest domestic uses of energy and we can provide advice on reducing the amount of energy used to warm water.

Hot water tanks should be insulated, old boilers replaced and we can also provide advice on solar water heating systems.
