Homeowners adding green energy features

British homeowners are increasingly keen to build green energy additions onto their homes, it has been claimed.

According to Jason Orme, editor of Homebuilding and Renovating magazine, people are adding these features to "achieve an eco-house, not just to meet the green building regulations".

He said that consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of technologies such as heat pumps, solar panels and "super levels of insulation", despite many house builders not offering them.

"People want to be sure that their house is going to be future-proof not just from a building regulations point of view but also in terms of their sustainability," Mr Orme concluded.

Earlier in the month, the government announced plans to give more than a quarter of all British homes a "green makeover".

The scheme will see around seven million properties across the country have their green credentials boosted, through small renewable heating systems, wood-burning boilers and other features.
