People looking to make energy savings and
reduce their electricity bills have lead to record numbers of ecofriendly light bulbs being sold.
Both Tesco and Sainsbury's have report massive increases in the amount of energy saving compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulbs, reports the Guardian.
Tesco claims it sold 4.5 million in January alone, while Sainsbury's saw an increase of 150 per cent on last year with 1.25 million taken off the shelves in the first month of 2009.
According to various organisations, replacing a single incandescent light bulb with a CFL, could save a household £3 on its electricity bill a year, and £45 over its lifetime.
Replacing all the light bulbs in a home with the energy saving variety could save homes £50 and a total of £675 across their lifetime.
CFLs use between a fifth and a quarter of the electricity of an incandescent light bulb to shine the same intensity of light.
As well as replacing light bulbs,
other cheap steps households can take to cut their energy bills include, using draught excluders and hanging thick curtains in front of windows.
