Energy savings from water efficiency should be considered by the government as it plans to make all homes near zero by 2050, according to Waterwise.
The water conservation organisation praised plans for a 'Great British refurb' but said that to cut energy bills and carbon dioxide emissions it was important to tackle water efficiency as well.
A quarter of the average family's
energy bill pays for heating water, according to Waterwise, while its annual water consumption emits the same amount of carbon as two transatlantic flights.
Jacob Tompkins, director of Waterwise, said: "If the government is serious about tackling carbon emissions from homes, which we believe it is, we urge them to include hot water saving measures such as water efficient showerheads within the fantastic programme they have announced today.
"Saving water saves carbon, and saves us all money on both water and energy bills."
The organisation also found that about half of respondents to a survey said they would pay more for a water efficient home.

interactive house website can see a range of efficiency measures we recommend for water use.
Among them is ensuring hot water tanks are insulated to slow down heat loss, using a two flush toilet and a toilet hippo that cuts the amount of water used in each flush.
