The recession may be bad news from a financial point of view but it is said to be benefiting businesses in other ways.
According to British Eco Energy, companies across the country are looking to save money and are therefore introducing energy saving methods.
Andrew Moore, managing director of the advisory group, said that the recession is "stimulating a lot of companies'" environmental efforts.
He suggested that firms across the board are being forced to reduce their energy bills and in turn addressing their carbon footprint issues.
Also becoming more important to companies is promoting the 'green image' successfully to their customers, Mr Moore added.
One form of renewable energy, which he believes will start to take off with more gusto in 2009 is wind power.
"The last couple of years we've had very poor summers and very poor sunshine, so sometimes solar is a bit of a turn off for some people who don't think we get enough sun, but we do get plenty of wind," he said.
"Some companies, as well, are putting them up; their competitors are seeing the wind turbine going up on their sites and feel: 'we need to keep up with our competitors and we should have one as well'."
