Welsh hospital applies for new energy centre

A hospital in Wales has unveiled plans to become powered by a green energy centre.

Swansea's Cefn Coed Hospital plans to be powered by wind turbines and bio fuel if permission is granted.

Lindsey Jones, assistant director of planning, said: "It is planned to move away from the more traditional use of fossil fuels to an energy centre, producing all of the site's energy requirements with a low carbon footprint.

"The wind turbine will contribute approximately ten per cent of the electrical energy and all of the other innovative designs will be sustainable, so it will be much better for the environment."

She added that it was "very positive" that buildings such as hospitals were "helping to lead the way" in green energy provision.

Much of the plans would be shielded from the view of neighbours and hospital residents by shrubbery.

The development comes as part of a wider application to the City and County of Swansea for approval, which also includes a rehabilitation unit and two smaller step-down units.
