Benefits of offshore wind 'outweigh environmental impact'

The benefits of generating renewable energy in offshore wind farms outweigh the impact on the environment of wind farms, according to the British Wind Energy Association (BWEA).

According to the BWEA, a recent report by the government says that offshore wind turbines should be "non-controversial".

The Offshore Energy Strategic Environmental Assessment suggested that up to 7,000 wind turbines, in addition to those already built or planned, could be installed with a tolerable impact on the environment.

It claimed that 25 gigawatts (GW) more of power could be provided by these wind farms.

A BWEA spokesman said: "The government's view is that there are no obstacles in terms if impact on the environment or the wildlife. The potential impact will be greatly outweighed by the future benefits of these projects."

He added: "On the one hand impacts will be minimal, on the other hand potential benefits to the country as a whole will be enormous, so it is really quite a clear situation."

We have 21 offshore and onshore wind farms and are committed to developing the largest wind farm in the world – the 1GW London Array.
