Cost of solar panels to drop

Households looking to cut their energy bills could find solar panels increasingly good value for money, as their costs are set to fall up to ten per cent every year, according to an industry expert.

Speaking at the World Future Energy Summit, Kees van der Leun, board member of sustainable energy firm Econcern, said solar would be the major new energy in ten years time.

He added: "In the last decade, solar energy volumes have grown at an annual rate of 40 to 50 per cent. Conversely system prices are decreasing by an average seven to ten per cent per year, due to technological innovation and increased production capacity."

The firm has installed 0.3 kilometres squared of photovoltaic panels in the last year, with a generating capacity of 35 megawatts.

We can advise households that want to cut their energy costs on installing microgeneration devices.

However, we suggest that before considering generating their own electricity households consider the energy savings they can make around the home first.
