Scotland approves first commercial wave farm

One of the largest wave farms to be approved is to be built on a Scottish isle.

Lewis in the Western Isles will be the site of a four megawatt (MW) wave farm that will generate enough electricity for about 1,800 homes from 40 turbines.

First minister Alex Salmond said: "The Siadar wave farm will be one of the largest consented wave electricity generating stations in the world. It is the first commercial wave farm in Scotland."

He added: "This is proof of Scotland's unique opportunities in renewables and evidence that we are already on the way to seizing every opportunity to maximise our natural resources and capability to generate clean, green energy."

Scotland aims to meet 50 per cent of its electricity demand from renewables by 2050.

We have a slightly larger project in the pipeline.

The West Wave hub off the coast of Cornwall which would generate 5MW is in the pre-planning stages.

If completed, the project would supply enough electricity for 3,000 homes and displace 11,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.
